Welcome to Iceland

One of the few places on earth where a man can feel such freedom, breeze of fresh ocean, volcanoes, fields and valleys which are not spoiled by human as well as hot springs and everything else. But letґs starts everything from beginning.

Arriving in summer time.

If you travel by air you would arrive at Keflavik Airport (Leifur Eirнksson), which is the only international airport in Iceland. The airport is located around 40km from Reykjavik, and you are one step away to start your incredible, amazing and mystical journey filled with sagas and surprises. Of course, at the airport you can get all touristic information needed for you trip regarding tours, hotels, museums, restaurants, tour operators and car rentals. Some of car rental companies are located at airport, but if you have booked a car from company which is not located at airport, staff will meet you at arrival area and give you all information that you need. Iceland does not mean it is going to be cold! There are sunny days and we wish you to have good weather, we hope the Viking Gods will take care of the weather and brush away rainy clouds. When you have planned your trip, you are ready to start your journey. It is your own decision how to travel and what to see, but we do recommend you to rent a car. Because now in Iceland you can rent a used, older car for reasonable prices, which can help you to discover this romantic country and you will be able to see most of it.

When you have your rental car ready, all you can do is plan the route. From the car rental company you will get information regarding fuel prices and fuel station locations. Of course depending on your rental car group (car size) you will be explained which are recommended roads for your car. For example, damages on some particular roads are not covered by insurance. Always check out what kind of specific incurance you have to avoid unexpected incidents. The car rental staff will always gladly assist you if you have any questions. And of course when starting your journey do not forget about the traffic rules that are valid in Iceland.

If you have planned to drive around Iceland (ring road 1), remember a 4x4 wheel drive car is not necessary. You will be able to drive around island with smallest car you can rent at car rental company by cheapest price. The road around Iceland is good quality and during your stay you will be able to make lots of amazing photo and video captures. When driving the ring road we recommend you to drive not clockwise around Iceland, but other way which will help you to enjoy sunny days and the sun wonґt make your eyes go mad. And more amazing sights you will see, even from long distances. For example Seljalandsfoss waterfall, you will see it miles and miles before you arrive at this beautiful nature wonder. In summer time you will be able to visit almost all waterfalls that are located near road no 1. You wonґt only be able to see them, but even walk around some of them. But even if you are traveling by car do not forget warm  waterproof clothing at home.

If you have decided to travel with tour operator company, all the information you need will be provided by them. We recommend you te make sure what is and what is not included in the price. There are plenty of tour operators in Iceland, and we are sure you will be able to find your perfect one. Groups vary from large to small privat ones with only few people. We recommend you choosing companies which provide tours for private groups, that way you will be able to plan your trip and the journey will probably be more enjoyable.

We hope we have provided youn with at least small information regarding traveling in Iceland and if you have more questions, we will be able to help you. Contact GILDO ehf and we will do our best to help you.

Arriving at winter time.

We have always said that if you want to understand Iceland you have to see it at least twice - once in summer and once in winter. Of course as you arrive at airport in nwinter time, the weather might have unpleasant surpise for you, that you will think all worldґs trolls are mad at you and you will think that earth and sky are mixed together. But  even if it does not happen every day, cycling and hitch-hiking is not recommended at winter time. Most comfortable way would probably be rental car. The difference from summer time will be, that you wonґt be able to camp and you will need to stay in hotels. But donґt be dissappointed as in winter season hotel prices are very low and everyone should be able to find a good hotel room for reasonable prices.

As in summer time, also in winter you should not have any difficulties, unless unexpected snowstorm surprises you or even a vulcanic erruption, which happends quite often in Iceland, ca once in every 5 years.

What could be one of most interesting sights to see in winter, would probably waterfalls. Itґs amazing to see water running through ice. Gullfoss looks like itґs been handcuffed by ice and Seljalandsfoss, which was so sunny and friendly in summer, now looks dangerous and so unfriendly.

But bad weather in Iceland has some pluses. When you feel cold, just dive into so popular heated open air swimming pools or take bath in natural hot springs. The feeling is not possible to describe, outside is cold, nasty weather, but you sit in hot spring enjoying nature. Pure harmony. If you take bath in such springs or Blue lagoon, donґt forget to lift your eyes to sky, you might see greeting - northern lights or aurora borealis. You will feel like to Icelandic weather Gods are sending you message directly from sky. So amazing is this small place on earth.
